Master’s Overview

Master’s degree’s are awarded for the completion of graduate programs at universities throughout the world. Representing the advanced study of a specific discipline, master’s and online master’s degree programs are typically a mixture course-based curriculum and research. Many institutions of higher learning now offer an online master’s degree, which is directly equivalent to their on-campus counterpart. Admission to a master’s program is primarily contingent upon holding a bachelor’s degree. In the United States there are three main types of master’s degrees each awarded based the field of study, however all versions of the master’s degree are academically and professionally equivalent. The Master of Arts (M.A.) is typically awarded to students who complete degree program in the liberal arts, humanities, philosophy, social sciences, fine arts, nursing or theology. The Master of Science (M.S.) is awarded for graduate programs focused on technical or science-based curriculum and is awarded for completion of degree programs in the fields of engineering, physics, computer science, mathematics, and the natural sciences. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a specialized degree focused on advanced business practices, leadership and management. Depending on the degree program, graduation from a master’s program requires the completion of a thesis, practicum or research project.
